Project History:
For nearly a decade, environmental and human interventions have been ongoing in the region. The local forest was severely impacted by a cyclone in 1996 and a fire in 2002, promoting the growth of invasive species.
Overview:
Located near the Llanganates National Park, the Vohibola coastal forest is the last of its kind outside the protected areas of Madagascar, containing a unique and threatened array of specific and genetic diversity. The biodiversity here faces threats from exotic invasive species, regional logging efforts, and local community actions.
Objectives:
- Restore vegetation in deforested areas.
- Increase income sources for local communities;
- Support the sustainable management of forest resources;
- Undertake local actions that significantly mitigate global climate change through increased CO2 sequestration.
Persistent issues like bushfires have led to edge effects, altering microclimates and reducing the viability of local fauna, including endemic lemurs and amphibians.
Immediate restoration actions have been implemented and planned, identifying priority areas for reforestation.
