🌴🌴This week, we’re taking you under the #coconut trees 🐢🐢
Since 2022 Tropical Forest and Rural Development and Up2green have been supporting the communities of Ebodje located on the outskirts of Campo Ma’an park, in the South-West of Cameroon 🇨🇲
These villages, whose economy is based mainly on fishing 🐟 and eco-tourism 🐚 suffered from the Covid year with the drop in the number of tourists, and the increase in external anthropogenic activities which reduce fishery resources . Economic and fishing activities have declined and turtle poaching has increased.
To promote a new sustainable economic activity in the village, TFRD has contributed to the creation and support of a women’s association to promote coconuts 🥥 since 2021.
This development of the coconut sector has different purposes:
🌱 promote sustainable agroforestry activity;
👩🌾 enable women’s economic independence;
💸 diversify economic activities in the area;
🐢 reduce pressure on turtles;
🌴 reforest certain areas of the coastline.
- To promote coconuts, TFRD supports the association throughout the value chain:
- 🌱 creation and management of a nursery to provide coconut plants;
- 👩🌾 harvest and resale of coconuts by women members of the association;
- 🔪 creation of a premises and a future workshop for crushing nuts;
- ☀️ creation of a solar dryer to allow the drying of copra;
- 💰 sale to Tropical Forest Food and Cosmetics (TFRD partner company);
- 🚛 transport to the TFFC processing platform in Yaoundé;
- 🥥 transformation of coconut copra into oil;
- 💸selling oils and other coconut-based products.
