The Lokoli (Hlanzoun) swamp forest is essential for communities 👩🌾, biodiversity 🐒, protecting villages from flooding 🤲, etc.
But she is in danger because of the overexploitation of timber 🪵, resources, and land conversion 🔥 in agricultural areas 🎋.
Ecodec Benin, supported by Up2green and HUMY, has been developing activities since 2023 to restore deforested areas and conserve the heart of the forest.
On the ground and with the involvement of communities around the forest, the Ecodec team:
- performs participatory mapping 📖 with the villagers to define the areas to be preserved 🚫 growing areas 🌽;
- selects, shapes and supports the 5 nurseries to produce seedlings 🌱 necessary for reforestation, and for sale;
- plant native trees 🌳 adapted to swampy conditions 💧;
- raises awareness among communities about adoption of agroforestry practices 🌳🎋;
- raises conservation awareness among communities forest resources 🌲;
- monitors the plantings and replacing dead plants 🌴.
In 2023, 10,000 trees will be planted to restore and protect the surfaces closest to the wetland.
