In the north of Benin, 80% of the population depends on agriculture. Food crops (yam, cassava, rice, millet, corn, etc.) rub shoulders with cotton, a cash crop. However, desertification ☀️ is progressing in this territory, close to the Sahel. In addition, wood 🪵 from 🪓 surrounding trees, used for construction and cooking, is becoming rare.
Ecodec, supported by Up2green, disseminates agroforestry practices, an association of trees 🌳 and crops or animals on the same plot.
Objectives :
- ensure the sustainability of natural resources and the resilience of the environment to the effects of climate change 🗺️, conserve biodiversity 🦌, store carbon;
revive soil fertility 🪱🐜🪲, sustain production;
improve food security 🍊 🍲 and the living conditions of the population!
L’équipe d’Ecodec, sur le terrain et au plus près des villageois :
sensibilise les agricultrices et agriculteurs à l’adoption de pratiques agroécologiques, dont l’agroforesterie ;
produit des plants 🌱 diversifiés, d’arbres à croissance rapide, d’arbres locaux et de fruitiers ;
sélectionne, forme et accompagne les nouveaux planteurs ;
assure le suivi des plantations 🌴 et le remplacement des plants morts.
👏🏽 In 2022, 27,600 plants were planted, among 63 farmers 🤝, in 3 municipalities (Tanguiéta, Cobli and Matéri).
The trees most used and planted are Gmelina, cashew, Caïlcedrat and teak. Which ones do you know?
